Those who have their ears to the streets, radio mix shows, and mixtapes know that Red Café is no overnight success story. “I’ve given people a lot of music on da streets” says Red Café, who answers to Red, or in the case of close friends, Izzr. Mr Hottest In The Hood is now an artist signed to Bad Boy, in association with Konvict Muzik. Red has two new mentors on the scene, Diddy & Akon. He has finally gotten over the obstacles that held his releases back as he readies for his debut release on Shakedown/Konvict-Bad Boy.

Jermaine Denny is his name but people have called him Red his whole life. It was the name his street-hustling father went by. It’s what his mother calls him to this day. The Café would come later. “I hustled every kind of paraphernalia there is. I never stick to one hustle to make a dollar. I continue to move strategically to make something out of nothing.” So Red Café was where you could come to get anything you want; hence the reference to “Café”.

Being a Caribbean hotbed Flatbush Brooklyn did little to nurture a hip-hop jones. Red, who is of Guyanese descent, fell to the siren song of the streets. At about 13 years old, he was shot in the neck when he refused to be robbed of his gold ring. He was soon performing his own armed robberies before being arrested and sent off to jail. It was behind bars that his love affair with hip-hop would really flourish. It was in from 92-96. Some call that the renaissance of hip hop. “Snoop, Mobb Deep, BIG, Jay-Z, WuTang, The Chronic, Buckshot, Nas, etc. were all go’n hard... I knew then that being a successful rapper and businessman was what I wanted to accomplish.” Red recalls.

From the group, The Franchise which counted both Red and Jamal Woolard (Gravy) as members, to Loud Records, to Violator in the early days which is how it got started for Red. Then came Arista records where Red formed his relationship with Trackmasters to produce hits like ‘May I’ and ‘Virus’ as well landed him with tracks on the EA Sports Madden and NBA Live titles he was well on his way. But it was from the adversity faced when Arista folded right before Red’s release date his resourceful means of survival kicked in and carried him to Capitol with music legend Mack 10’s Hoo Bangin label. That spawned the hit ‘Bling Bloaw’ with Fabolous.

Red Café is known throughout the industry as one of its most successful ghostwriters. He has written for a lot of your favorite rappers including the hit ‘Pass the Courvoisier’. “Now I’m writin my own hits” Red comments, which has led us to this point with Red Café’s debut album dropping in 2009 on Shakedown/Konvict-Bad Boy.
